Anesthesia

Your pet received anesthesia today for his/her surgery.

Your pet should not have any food or water tonight until after 6. Even then your pet may not want any, which t is completely normal.

It is important to keep your pet in a warm and safe environment for the rest of today.

Anesthesia can cause some side effects, including nausea and diarrhea, whining, howling, and barking.

Keeping your pet in a safe and calm environment by themselves ie, in a bathroom, large closet, or a bigger crate will induce a smoother recovery.

Spay and Neuter

Ovariohysterectomy is the medical term for spaying or neutering a female.

In the procedure, the ovaries and uterus are removed. This prevents pregnancy, but also eliminates heat cycles, eliminates uterine and ovarian cancer, and  greatly reduces the likelihood of mammary cancer.

While an ovariohysterectomy is a routine surgery, it is a major abdominal surgery that requires general anesthesia.  Most dogs will recover from anesthesia with little or no trouble, while a few may need a couple of days to fully recover.  A little swelling at the incision site is normal.

There is no need for stitch removal and your dog can generally return to normal activity in a couple of days.

Thank you for letting us care for your pet.

After your pet's growth removal the incision was closed with stitches/staples and those will need to be removed in 2 weeks!

It is imperative that the surgical area stays dry for those 2 weeks, NO licking, swimming, baths, or anything else that can cause the area to become wet.

If you notice that your pet is licking excessively, or creating a reddened or swollen area around the incision you will need to get a cone. We sell them as well as PetSense and Tractor supply.

It is possible that your pet went home with antibiotics and or pain medication, please give those as directed starting tomorrow morning.

Dental

Your pet got a dental today!

If your pet had any teeth removed it is normal to have some bleeding for the first day and a half.

Having teeth removed does not affect the eating habits of your pet, you should continue using his/her normal food.

Heartworm Treatment

Your pet received some sedatives while in the clinic and will be drowsy the afternoon following pick-up. These meds can cause some nausea/upset GI, so diarrhea & vomiting is normal following departure. If it continues for over 48 hours, please contact us via phone or Facebook messenger. Do not give any food until after 6 PM on this day. They can return to their normal diet the following day.

No running/high-intensity playing (fetch, backyard play)  for at least 30 days (preferred 60 days) to allow the body to remove the parasites from the system.

Rest is absolutely necessary, but short casual walks are completely fine.

If your pet becomes lethargic, loses appetite, coughs up blood, or begins to severely cough. Contact the clinic immediately via phone or Facebook messenger (for after-hour help or if lines are busy)

Your pet will be sent home with a medication and should be followed corrected:

Doxycycline should be started the day after the last treatment (first full day home) and will be given for 30 days. This Medication should be given after eating a meal to prevent an upset stomach.
